The Bathurst 1000 is not an easy race to win, but a very easy one to lose.

Unfortunately TEKNO had a tough day on The Mountain, with the cards not falling our way in key moments of the race.
From the outset, both cars needed chassis tweaks, with the slippery track bringing out some unwanted tendencies that needed attention.

The engineers and the team worked hard at each stop, making a variety of changes, but the cars were never quite right, with the drivers compensating all day and having to battle mid-pack.

The Car 19 Team TEKNO Darrell Lea crew of Jonathon Webb and Marc Lieb fell victim to a safety car coming immediately after their second pit stop, which lost them a lot of track position. They battled hard all day, including a brake issue later in the race to finish in 12th position.

Car 97’s drivers Shane van Gisbergen and Jeroen Bleekemolen had a good start to the day, with Shane running as high as second place in the first stint, before understeer issues and a slow pitstop for brake pads pushed them down the order. They both battled hard to get back through the pack, but the pace just wasn’t there for them to move forward, finishing the race in 11th place.

How they saw it:

Finishing position: 12th

“It was a pretty tough day all round, really. We had good pace in that middle stint, the car was really good, but we pitted one lap before the safety car and that really pushed us down the order, and it was hard to come back from that. We tried hard, and the team did a great job, but 12th was about the best we could do, considering the circumstances. Marc was fantastic, he did a great job, keeping it clean and he had great pace too. That’s Bathurst. It’s one of those tracks where it can go your way, or it can all go wrong. We moved forward, so we have to be happy with that.”

Marc Lieb

Finishing position: 12th

“Yeah, it was a tough day today, definitely. The track was very slippery, but I was doing similar lap times to free practice, so I found some good pace. We were quite unfortunate with the safety car, we lost a lot of track position and time in the pit lane, and it was just bad luck that we didn’t make the call one lap later, which would have put us right in the chase for the top five, which would have been nice. We missed out on the top ten, but we got very close. I’m very happy with the whole Bathurst experience. To the team, the whole crew, the engineers and Jonathon and Steve Webb, I have to say thank you. It is an honour to drive a car around this track, I had a lot of fun. I hope to come back.”

Shane van Gisbergen
Team TEKNO V.I.P. Petfoods #97 VF Commodore
Finishing position: 11th

“Today started alright, we were second. The car wasn;t all that good, especially in the middle of the race, we just struggled and then we were too far back. We didn’t have too many problems, the safety cars didn’t always fall our way, but we largely struggled. It was slippery off line, but there were less marbles than previous years, which was good. 11th is nothing to smile about, but it could have been worse, so we’re not too disappointed. Overall, a so-so day.”

Jeroen Bleekemolen
Team TEKNO V.I.P. Petfoods #97 VF Commodore
Finishing position: 11th

“It was a great experience, one of the best events I’ve been involved in. I really had a good time, from the beginning of the week until the finish. I hope to be doing this more often. We had a tough race, a few unlucky moments. My first stint didn’t go so well, I was struggling with mid-corner understeer at a few key points where people got a run on me, and I lost a few positions. My second stint got better, and my third stint was better again. I had some good battles with others around me, good fights, you have to work hard to be fast in these cars, but that’s what makes it so spectacular. I really enjoyed. I definitely want to come back next year. If the chance is there, I would sign up right now. I think a lot of European drivers envy us, being able to do it, so I definitely want to do it again.”
