The final race weekend of the season, the Coates Hire Sydney 500 is essentially the championship decider. Taking place on the streets of Sydney Olympic Park, Will Davison and the Darrell Lea STIX team certainly had their work cut out for them.
Street courses like the Homebush Street Circuit always prove to be a challenge for the drivers. Tight corners, high-speed sections and a frightening lack of track run-off all make for a thrilling race. The race schedule for the 2016 Coates Hire Sydney 500 consisted of two 74 lap races of the 3.2km long course over Saturday and Sunday.
Davison kicked off the first race of the weekend (Race 28) with a P12 start. Climbing through the pack, Davison picked up 5 positions, crossing the chequered flag with an impressing P7 finish.
Sunday’s race (Race 29) saw a similar result with Davison picking up a P11 start in qualifying and closing the very last race of the 2016 season with a P8 finish.
After 29 races, the 2016 Virgin Australia Supercars Championship has come to a close with Will Davison finishing 5th on the leaderboard with 2589 points.
