After the frustrations of the concrete canyon that is the Gold Coast 600 track on the streets of Surfers Paradise, the Darrell Lea STIX team headed to our final purpose-built motor racing circuit of the season.

Pukekohe, south of Auckland, has been a regular feature on the Supercars schedule in New Zealand, and it’s a track driver, Will Davison has always found both enjoyable and challenging.

The Pukekohe circuit is bumpy, super-fast and also technical. It rewards bravery but also smoothness and flow. It’s got some real exciting aspects to it, and generally quite a few passing opportunities. The race schedule for Auckland is based off the SuperSprint format which incorporates two 35 lap sprint races on Saturday and Sunday. There are no compulsory pit stops and the choice of tyre was the Dunlop hard compound.

Davison’s starting position for the first race of the weekend (Race 24) was P12. The #19 made one position off the line and then moved into P10 on lap 10 where he would take the chequered flag.

A stronger qualifying session see Davison further up the grid for Race 25, starting out of P5. Unfortunately the #19 lost a position on the opening lap to drop back into P6 where he would finish Saturday’s second race.

“There are patches of new surface here and there, but to be honest the bumps are still major, which adds character to the place. At 200km/h+ bumps make it a wild old ride inside the car, you’ve really got be switched on.” said Davison.

On Sunday the #19 Darrell Lea STIX Commodore started out of P9 for Race 26 and P7 for Race 27. Once again Davison got off the line well to make up a position on the opening lap but later lost the position to the #55 of Mostert.

The #19 maintained his position in 9th until the car #97 and #88 collided with each other to move into P7. Davison finished race Race 26 in P8.

The final race of the weekend proved to be the toughest of the round as Davison fell back to P13 in the early phase of the race. The #19 maintained position to follow the #23 of Caruso to the chequered flag.

Will Davison is currently 5th in the championship on 2403 points after 27 races.

The Darrell Lea STIX Commodore will next be on track at the Coates Hire Sydney on December 2-4.
